Description
A new poetry collection by Charles Adès Fishman
In the Wake of the Glacier: New Selected Poems brings together work from eight earlier books, including poems written as long ago as 1968 and as recently as 2017. This timely and far-reaching collection also includes 41 previously uncollected poems and 9 entirely new ones that underscore the poet’s passionate love of nature, family, history, and justice.
After a week of heavy rain
the beach was an archipelago
I would explore each captured islet
Cast adrift, I would be shipwreck
and mariner and waded in deep,
my feet trolling the bottom
I would learn each dune and lake
I would dream the world new again
as it was in the wake of the glacier.
“Charles Fishman listens to the world with a stillness and intensity most of us can’t imagine. He knows there are voices in the wind, and he hears them and listens to them, and then he tells us what they are saying in a voice so direct and selfless and loving that we feel that we ourselves are hearing those voices.”
— John Guzlowski, author of Echoes of Tattered Tongues: Memory Unfolded
